Solstice Clock

Pathei Mathos: A Solstice Clock is located between the Field House and Cline Library. The artist, Geoffrey Gross, built the granite and Carrara marble solstice clock as part of NAU's centennial celebrations in 1999. Gross' interest in solar objects, astronomy, archaeology, Celtic knot work, and prehistoric cultures inspired him to create the piece. Gross constructed the stone benches as a place for people to relax, reflect, and enjoy his artwork. The university originally placed the work on the east side of the Field House, a site specifically chosen by Gross for this piece. When the university moved the clock to its current location, it placed the stones haphazardly and the artwork no longer functions as intended.

This 2015 oral history with artist Geoffrey Cross discusses his ideas for creating the solstice clock.
