The Voice statue
In 2013, School of Art faculty member Ryan Lamfers created Voice. Lamfers constructed the 14 foot-long vintage microphone using recycled light poles, propane tanks, and expanded steel. While accepting the 2013 Viola Award for Emerging Artist, Lamfers described Voice as representing "the ability to be heard." The sculpture embodies Northern Arizona University's (NAU) School of Music, Theatre Department, and School of Arts. The School of Music offers instrumental studies, music education, music theory and composition, and choral studies. The School of Art provides art education, ceramics, interior design, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and studio foundations. Collectively, Voice symbolizes the diversity, scholarship, and ingenuity of NAU's fine arts.
