Social and Behavioral Sciences West

Northern Arizona University completed construction of Social and Behavioral Sciences West (SBS West) in 1973. Due to the record-breaking 210 inches of snowfall in Flagstaff during the winter of 1972-1973, the building opened later than expected. In 1973 The College of Business Administration moved from the Business Administration building to SBS West. Between 1973 and 2005, the University spent nearly $3 million in renovations to the building. The improvements included stabilization of the building, infrastructure repairs, and office remodeling.

SBS West is home to the departments of Applied Indigenous Studies, Ethnic Studies, Geography Planning and Recreation, Sustainable Communities, and Anthropology. The Bellwood Auditorium in SBS West is named in honor of Tom Octavius Bellwood, president of Arizona State College at Flagstaff from 1945-1947.
