Louie the Lumberjack statue
This Lumberjack figure is one of two, twenty-five foot tall statues used by Northern Arizona University at the Skydome as icons of its mascot. The other resides inside near the south scoreboard. California's Prewitt Fiberglass made each around 1963, and sold them to the Lumberjack Café on Milton Road. In 1973, the Zanzucchi family purchased the café, renamed it Granny's Closet, and donated them to NAU. The statues stood at Lumberjack Stadium until NAU moved them to their current locations in 1979.
Both figures are "Muffler Men," large promotional statues produced in the 1960s and 1970s as roadside attention-getters, often employed by automobile repair shops in the Route 66 era. They are visible in the 1969 movie Easy Rider, at their original location outside the Lumberjack Café.
