At this location, just a mile or so upstream of the Tsegi Canyon camera stations, this tributary of Laguna Creek has incised to bedrock by the time the Hanks photograph was taken in 1927. Wildcat Canyon as seen here is ~150 feet higher than is Tsegi Canyon at the downstream camera stations, a significant topographic and hydraulic gradient that may be responsible for the incision here. The geologic enigma is that the conventional wisdom holds that arroyo-incision should proceed upstream, to allow the eroded material a downstream place to go. Note that the bend in the arroyo just upstream of the trail in the 1927 photograph has migrated significantly downstream since then.
