On the Flats

This repeat photography pair looks to the northwest, at the southeast face of Navajo Mountain (Naat- sis’aan, or “Head of the Earth Woman”). The absence of foreground features in the 1927 photograph and the enormous expanse of juniper trees will forever obscure the exact location of the 1927 camera station. The 2005 repeat photograph was taken at 36.94960° N, 110.74104° W, at a place where abundant anthropogenic detritus suggests proximity to the Wetherill Trail. Whether the growth of juniper at the expense of the 1927 grasslands here is due to over-grazing or a wet 20th Century or both is still debated.
