The 1927 trip attempted to cross the Colorado River at the mouth of Forbidding Canyon, below its confluence with the San Juan River, but failed. In 1928 the Kluckhohn party proceeded down the Desha drainage to the San Juan and crossed it there, then crossed the wedge of land separating the Colorado and San Juan, and proceeded down Cottonwood Creek to the Hole-in-the-Rock Crossing of the Colorado River made famous by Mormon pioneers in the winter of 1879-1880. This first Hanks’ photograph was taken in 1927, the second in 1928 in nearly the same location.
