Pete Berry came around the same time and constructed the objectively nicest settlement on the rim. The Grand View Hotel was finished in 1897, only surviving a few decades before it was torn down in the late 1920s. It also benefited from the stage line from Flagstaff. After the construction of the El Tovar and the emergence of the railroad, business declined quickly. Berry’s original copper mining claims were also bought by the Canyon Copper Co.
