What turns
you on?

"Great photo
--what camera
did you use?"

What turns you on? A successful picture must do something to the person looking at it. It must cause a strong reaction--compassion, sadness, inspiration, joy, laughter. If the idea behind a picture is exciting enough, the quality doesn't has to be perfect. Zero in on the idea that inspired you to take the picture in the first place.

"Great photo--what camera did you use?" This commonly asked question is much like asking the writer of a good story what kind of typewriter or word processor he used. It's not uncommon for folks to see a picture they like, find out the brand of camera it was shot with, and then rush out and buy that camera--hoping it'll do the same for them. It seldom does.
