Since reading the novel Blood Brother (1947) by Elliot Arnold as a young man, in which the ceremony was described, John Running had an interest in seeing an Apache Sunrise ceremony. The Sunrise ceremony marks a girl's onset of puberty. In 2010, with the aid of an Apache friend, permission from the girl's parents, and the medicine man, Running documented a ceremony at Camp Verde, AZ. Afterwards he created books of his photographs which he then gave to the girl, her family, and the medicine man.
