
Policies for Use of Materials
- Registration
- New patrons must complete the Research Application form above and present valid photo identification to the attendant at the Reference Counter. Identification will be kept at the Reference Counter and returned upon completion of the day's research.
- Reading Room
- NO materials may be removed from the Lemont Reading Room - departmental collections are non-circulating. Materials are paged with a Call Slip.
- NO eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing of tobacco is permitted in Special Collections and Archives.
- NO children are allowed in the Lemont Reading Room.
- All coats, briefcases, purses, backpacks, and other items not essential to research must be placed in a locker adjacent to the service desk. All materials brought into the research area are subject to search upon entering and leaving.
- Personal computers, typewriters, tape recorders may be used unless they disturb other patrons or their use might violate restrictions or copyright.
- NO cameras or personal photocopiers are allowed in the Lemont Reading Room.
- Use of Materials
- The research material must be handled with great care. Researchers must not write or lean upon, trace, mark, or otherwise alter or mishandle materials provided for their use. No books or other objects may be laid upon materials.
- Books, photos, maps, and manuscripts should be kept flat on the table.
- Only pencils (no pens) may be used.
- Only one box will be brought to you at a time, and only one folder or volume may be removed from a box at a time.
- Only six books can be used or kept on the table at a time.
- Mishandling materials may result in expulsion from the department and denial of future access to materials.
- Quiet conversation is allowed. Please be aware of other researchers' need for concentration. Leave the Lemont Reading Room for extended conversations.
- Some collections may be marked RESTRICTED. Staff members will furnish information on the nature of the restrictions. The researcher must assume full responsibility for fulfilling the terms of the various agreements once he/she has been given permission to use restricted collections.
- Photographs must be handled with gloves. Gloves may also be required for the handling of other materials. Do not change the order of photographs or other materials or withdraw them from protective sleeves.
- Copying
- Photocopies and photographic reproductions may be ordered. Ask an attendant for forms and assistance. Photocopy order forms are available at the Reference Counter. Copying may be prohibited due to donor restrictions, copyright law, privacy law, fragility of the item, or other legitimate reasons. Patrons bear all responsibility for copyright violation.
- Publication
- The written permission of Special Collections and Archives must be obtained before publication of any item or quotation beyond fair use. This includes theses and dissertations.
