In order to protect unique items, Special Collections materials are made available in a comfortable reading room. Patrons are asked to complete a research application and present a picture identification. Although the material does not circulate, many items may be copied for a nominal fee. All collections are housed in a secure, climate controlled area. The library operates a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory and photographic darkroom, which allow on-site preservation of materials. The Special Collections Image Database Web site contains over 5,000 on-line images, accessible anywhere in the world, as well as on computers available in the library.
