Hohokam Spiral Petroglyph, 1988

1988. Arizona. 4×5” photographic transparency. NAU.PH.2021.24.001.002.W-424

Hohokam Spiral Petroglyph overlooks a forest of saguaros and the Tucson mountain range. In the foreground is a prominent petroglyph in the shape of a spiral, framed by the triangular shape of the boulder. The petroglyph is most likely a migration symbol from the Hohokam culture. The form of the boulder mimics the zigzag of the mountain line. The clouds, mountains, and saguaros form three distinct layers in the back- and midground, creating a sense of movement in the otherwise static scene.

This photograph complements The Goosenecks. Both feature triangular shapes which dominate the foreground, occupying roughly two-thirds of the frame.

Hokokam Spiral Petroglyph was included in Eternal Desert (1990) with text by Frank Waters.

Taken along the Signal Hill Trail in Saguaro National Park, Arizona.
