A classic, subtly stunning Arizona sunset. As the title would suggest, the real subject of Fading Light is the evening light. Tucked beneath the mountain line, the sun’s light guides the viewer along the plane which takes up most of the image. The chollas and beavertail cactus in the foreground hold the sun like an inner glow, casting long shadows along the dirt. Through his use of light, David Muench is able to pull vibrancy from a rather dull desert palette.

Muench likes to push the horizon line to its most dramatic position for his compositions. In Fading Light, it is refracted light which allows for a separation between the ground and the mountain range in the distance.

Taken in the McMullen Valley, Harquahala Mountains, Arizona.
