Rainpool was selected for its vibrant colors and gradient tones. The warmth in the image comes from a stream of sunlight. Where the shadows fall, the cool pinks and purples follow. In contrast to Muench’s more dramatic lighting techniques, there are no harsh lines of shadow to be found in this photograph. The pools of water reflect the sky, the only way to orient oneself in the image, carrying the viewer farther into the depths of the canyon. Given that this photograph was taken with the camera lens towards the ground and into a reflective pool, it’s impressive there’s no implication of Muench being there at all. (The absence of humans on the landscape is notable throughout Muench’s work more generally.)
Rainpool – Waterholes Canyon complements The Subway – North Creek, the only two predominantly cool toned images in the exhibit. They also mimic each other’s form and feel, with mesmerizing pools of water and winding rock structures.
Taken near Glen Canyon Recreation Area in Page, Arizona.
