COWDEN HALL

The first 440-bed, three-story dormitory on campus was designed by Guirey, Srnka, and Arnold and built by Manhattan-Dickmann in 1963-64 at a cost of approximately $1,175,700. The building was dedicated by Dr. Eldon Ardrey, director of the School of Liberal Arts. The residence hall is named in honor of James Steele Cowden, a Phoenix businessman who exchanged 320 acres of land with A.S.C. for forest service land adjacent to the campus. Today Cowden houses several academically oriented programs such as the Three Year Program, Freshman Scholars, and Freshman Honors.
