CLINE LIBRARY

The oldest portion of Cline Library, a three-level structure designed by Terry Atkinson and built by Manhattan-Dickmann, was dedicated in 1966. The facility offered 66,000 total square feet of useable space and seating for 1,600. The 100,000 volume collection was managed by a staff of four librarians. Two murals, A 1967 Look to the Future and Traditions in Pictorial Form, were painted by Sedona artist Stephen Juharos for the library's entryway at a cost of $4,000. In 1980, another 30,000 square feet were added to the structure to facilitate housing the library's media center, technical services department, computer room, study and study areas, and a library instruction classroom. On April 9, 1988, NAU named the library the Cline Library in honor of Platt H. and Barbara Cline, distinguished alumni and benefactors of NAU. In 1988, the Arizona Board of Regents authorized expanding the library once again, with a ground breaking on May 10, 1990. Designed by Architecture One-Sasaki Associates and constructed by the PACE Laurie Corporation, the new addition consisted of a two-story structure that was added to the north and east sides of the existing building. The 120,000 square feet addition was finished in August of 1991. The pre-existing structure was then renovated during the 1991-92 school year, bringing final costs for the entire project to $16.5 million. Today Cline houses over 1.4 million volumes and again has a seating capacity of 1,600.
