A. Charles Bonney
Charles Bonney, after consulting with President J. Lawrence Walkup, was commissioned
to design and cast an eight-foot bronze statue of a lumberjack. Both men agreed
to deviate from the traditional lumberjack image (beard, plaid shirt) by portraying
a handsome, vigorous youth to serve as a symbol of the campus and newly-named
Northern Arizona University. Using himself as a model so to save the expense of
hiring one, Bonney worked twenty-hour weeks at $1.70 and hour for months. The
statue was well recieved by the campus community, and Bonney was awarded a $500
honorarium for his efforts.
