Biographic note:
Jack Smith, a Flagtaff historian, began work on tracing the historic Beale Wagon Road across Arizona as part of his master's thesis in 1974. Since that time he has published a number of articles and books on the Beale Wagon Road.

The road was established in the late 1850's by U.S. Navy Lt. Edward F. Beale, who began its construction near Fort Smith, Arkansas, and carried it all the way to California. In Northern Arizona the wagon road was the predecessor to Route 66 and Interstate 40.
