Biographic note:
Alta Anne Smith was born in Taylor County, West Virginia in 1884. In 1900 Miss Smith received her diploma and began teaching in Arizona. She spent the next 10 years teaching in Hillside, Ray, and Sonora, Arizona and served as principle of Sonora School. During the summers of 1913 and 1915 she spent her time at summer school at the Northern Arizona State Teacher's College in Flagstaff. Miss Smith moved to Oklahoma in 1920 and later taught in Houston, Texas where she retired in 1954. She died there at 90 years of age, in 1974.
