The Cline Library Special Collections and Archives Department takes special measures to preserve its holdings. Photographs and manuscripts are housed within a variety of archival materials to ensure long-term preservation. Climate controls maintain proper temperatures and humidity. A state-of-the-art vault with a Halon fire-suppression system protects the most rare materials. Many of our conservation techniques are performed within the department’s in-house conservation lab. In the lab, measures are taken to prevent or thwart the deterioration of rare or specialized documents. The lab is equipped with a preservation darkroom, an ultrasonic welder for polyester encapsulation of documents, a deacidifcation chamber, fume hood, phase-box maker, and other conservation equipment. More information on preserving paper documents can be found at Stanford University's Conservation OnLine (CoOL) site and at the Northeast Document Conservation Center. |
