This sequence of photographs, taken on June 23, 1959, depicts P.T. Reilly and passenger Joe Szep on the Colorado River 24.5 Mile Rapid in the Susie-R. As seen in this sequence, the Susie-R is capsized by a strong eddy in the rapid. According to the entry in Reilly's river log, "A pile driving lateral hit my port and flipped us beam on at the end of the tongue. Joe and I both came up under the boat but worked to the side. We hung on to the lifeline and rode the big ones" (Spec. Coll. MS 275, Folder 11). Szep was separated from the Susie-R, while Reilly rode with the capsized boat through subsequent rapids, then landed with the boat at Mile 26.7. Szep was picked up by Carl Pederson and Moulty Fulmer in the other boat on the trip, the Flavell, and met Reilly at his Mile 26.7 landing. Digitally scanned and compressed into a GIF animation file for Web presentation, the sequence was assembled from 22 still photographs taken by either Pederson or Fulmer. Additional information on this and other trips down the Colorado River by P.T. Reilly can be found in the Cline Library Special Collections and Archives P.T. Reilly Manuscript Collection, MS 275, and in the book, Grand Canyon, a Century of Change: Rephotography of the 1889-1890 Stanton Expedition, by Robert H. Webb. |
