Bert's travels eventually wound their way to the Grand Canyon where he found work with William Wallace Bass. On an application he filled out for the Park Service to work in the newly created Grand Canyon National Park, Bert Lauzon listed his work from 1911 through 1917 as "Grand Canyon Livery and Guiding."

W. W. Bass was a well-known name at the Grand Canyon. He migrated from Indiana to Arizona in 1880, initially for health reasons. He settled north of Williams where he lived in a cave along Cataract Creek. Rumors of gold brought him to the Grand Canyon. When the gold proved to be a myth, he immersed himself in other pursuits, becoming a guide, promoter and minor politician (more by avocation than election), as well as a miner. A flamboyant and gregarious person, Bass wanted to share the Grand Canyon with others as their guide and leader.

William Wallace set up rustic accommodations in the western Grand Canyon at Havasupai Point, named, appropriately, Bass Camp. He built a road from the railway stations in Ashfork and Williams to transport tourists via his own stagecoach to Bass Camp, beginning a business that was to last until 1923.

In 1892, Bass met Ada Diefendorf, a music teacher, on one of his tours into Cataract Creek (Havasu). They were married two years later. Edith, their oldest child, was born in 1896, followed by William Guy (Billie), Hazel and Mabelle.

Ada became the first Anglo woman to raise a family in the Grand Canyon. Her strong work ethic was paramount to the success of Bass's tourist business.
