A. Fall of 1915
In the fall of 1915, Northern Arizona Normal School's football team was nicknamed
the "Lumberjacks" upon playing its first interscholastic game against Winslow
High School. Under Coach Clarence D. Thorpe, the Lumberjacks defeated Winslow
High 26-0. The nickname itself derived from the fact that lumbering was the most
prominent industry in Flagstaff at the time.
