Gunnar Widforss:
Painter of the Grand Canyon

El Dorado: The Grand Canyon

"Of all the places he painted, Widforss came to love the Grand Canyon best. He spent most of the latter part of his life along the rims, painting its various moods from sunrise to sunset. He always liked to be on the North Rim in the fall to catch the beautiful shades of the aspen leaves. He appeared to be untiring in his work, even hiking into the Inner Gorge with paints and artist's paper.

Over the years Grand Canyon people came to think of Widforss as almost a part of the Canyon itself. Better than anyone else he managed to put on paper the real feeling of the Canyon -- whatever is there that excites people and stirs them deeply" (38-39).
