Internships
The Cline Library invites applications for: The Elizabeth M. and P.T. Reilly Internship. The preferred candidate will be a graduate student in information science or museum studies working toward a career in a library, museum, or archives setting or a Native American tribal member engaged in cultural resource management. Graduate students should be currently enrolled with an anticipated completion date of August/September 2010 or later. Undergraduate (junior or senior) applied indigenous studies, geography, history, and anthropology students are also encouraged to apply.
Summer 2010: the Cline Library wishes to develop both a physical and virtual (Web-based) exhibit, which will explore the power of archival records to impact lives, individually and collectively. The Reilly intern will assume primary responsibility for the virtual component of the exhibit and provide support—development of interpretive text, design, and fabrication—for the physical exhibit.
To paraphrase Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., “archives are for society what memory is for human beings.” Everyone has a story to tell. The NAU Cline Library holds 8 million manuscripts, photographs, oral histories, maps, and films which document myriad events, places, and diverse people of the Colorado Plateau from ancient cultures to the present. By highlighting some of the staff’s favorite tales and archival treasures (ranging from the humorous to the sublime), this exhibit will illustrate what an archives can offer to the public and the fascinating ways records are used. Questions to address will include: What is an archives? Why should we care? How do different communities and societies preserve and share their knowledge? How do we determine what to keep? What are some of the ethical and legal issues associated with archival records, such as privacy, copyright, and cultural sensitivity? What does the digital future hold for our records?
This summer’s internship will offer the opportunity to gain practical experience in the following areas:
- Research
- Synthesis of primary and published sources
- Exhibit Planning (team-based)
- Storyline development and content interpretation
- Web page design, creation, and digital storytelling.
- Public speaking (presentation to library staff upon completion of the internship)
The Reilly intern will be expected to work 40 hours per week for 8 consecutive weeks, during the time period of June 7 through August 13, 2010. The successful candidate can select the 8-week block that best suits his or her schedule. There is some flexibility in the work week schedule.
Stipend: $3,000 (no benefits included) total. The Reilly intern will be paid in bi-weekly installments to reach the total of $3,000. On-campus housing is subject to availability. For more information, please consult NAU's Summer and Workshop Housing page. Renting a room in the community is also a possibility. The successful candidate must be willing to relocate to Flagstaff, Arizona for eight weeks and underwrite his or her own food, lodging, and transportation to work as the Reilly Intern at NAU. Actual travel expenses to report to work in Flagstaff and return home at the end of the internship will be reimbursed up to $500 (original receipts required).
