Giving to Cline Library
Cline Library serves as an interchange for intellectual discovery, connecting our tradition to our future promise. The library is a crucial component to the fulfillment of NAU's mission of teaching, research, service and community outreach. We value the ability to respond to changing needs of the library and its users by developing innovative solutions, practices, and services in a creative work environment that supports flexibility, collaboration, and an openness to new ideas, practices, risk taking, and forward thinking. Your contributions help us meet these goals and challenges.

Monetary Gifts in Support of Library Endowments and Initiatives
Your assistance is crucial for the Cline Library to maintain and advance its quality service programs and collections. Monetary gifts to the library have far-reaching impacts. Direct monetary gifts are the most common form of giving and can be unrestricted or designated for a specific fund or project. These gifts are tax deductible to the full extent permitted by law. Checks should be made payable to the “Northern Arizona University Foundation.” You can help ensure the preservation of a legacy of learning for future generations by making a monetary contribution to one or more of the following funds:
Funding Priorities
- Cline Library Innovation Fund
Provide the Library with the flexibility to pursue emerging technologies and seed new projects that have the potential to greatly advance the Library's mission. - Library Fund
Support the achievement of the Library’s goals through funding for the materials, initiatives and activities of Cline Library. - Special Collections and Archives
Support access to the Library’s Colorado Plateau and University Archives collections through the digitization and preservation of manuscripts, photographs, and historic film footage; the collection, transcription, and digitization of oral history interviews; the acquisition of archival collections and books which trace the history and development of the Colorado Plateau region; and the preparation of public exhibits. Monetary gifts accompanying a collection donation to support on-going care and access are increasingly significant and appreciated.
Other Funds & Endowments
- Hanks Endowment
Support a Cline Library Hanks Scholar to locate and document camera stations of photographs held by Special Collections and Archives, with emphasis on the images in the Colorado Plateau Archives. - Library Book Fund
Provide funding for books in support of the University's curricula, research priorities and mission. - P.T. Reilly Endowment
Provide funding for a paid summer internship opportunity to a Native American tribal member engaged in archival administration or a student interested in a career in information management. The internship has focused on some of the following exhibit and oral history projects: Katie Lee, Indigenous Voices, Hopi History Curriculum, Glen Canyon, and Fire on the Plateau (see the Colorado Plateau Archives Exhibits page). - Un-named Subject Endowments
Subject endowments may be established to acquire materials related to a particular subject area, i.e. biology, literature, history, etc.
Planned Gifts
A planned gift can be structured to fulfill a long-desired philanthropic interest and may also allow you to increase income, save taxes, and make a legacy gift to the library that might not otherwise be possible. For more information on arranged a planned gift to the library, visit NAU's Gift Planning page.
Honor with Books and Media
Celebrate, remember or acknowledge a person, an occasion, or an accomplishment by funding the purchase of a book, CD or DVD for Cline Library's collections. A commemorative label will be affixed to your gift. You may designate a specific subject area if you wish. The subject areas include: Fine Arts, Health, Humanities, Science & Engineering, Social Sciences, Education and Business. Your gift through the Honor with Books and Media Program is tax deductible in accordance with applicable IRS rules. Upon receipt of your gift, Cline Library will send you a letter indicating the title selected containing the commemorative label. You may select the amount of your gift from the following:
- $50 (1 commemorative label)
- $100 (2 commemorative labels)
- $250 (5 commemorative labels)
- $500 (10 commemorative labels)
- $1000 (20 commemorative labels)
Cline Library Resource Wish List
Wish List: Priority Print and Media Resource Titles. This list includes book and media titles that Cline Library is interested in adding to its general and special collections. You may have a copy on your bookshelf that is gathering dust, love shopping at Amazon.com, or you just believe it is important for students and faculty to have access to these resources. See also the Cline Library's Wish List at Amazon.com (click on the "Add to Cart" button next to a title in the list to purchase it for the library).
Gifts of Archival Collections
Most archival collections found at the Cline Library are gifts to Northern Arizona University from people who share an appreciation for the value of regional historical materials as well as an interest in their preservation and public access. All gift materials, whether one item or a thousand, contribute to our understanding of the Colorado Plateau or the history of the University across a multitude of disciplines. For a description of recent gift collections, visit the library's What's New page and select a recent Library Insights newsletter back issue (right column).
The Cline Library always appreciates information about personal, business or organizational records which relate to the Colorado Plateau or Northern Arizona University and which may be acquired through a gift or bequest. A policy outlining the scope of the collections housed in Cline Library’s Special Collections and Archives is available upon request.
Please be aware that donations of archival collections involve both a transfer of physical ownership and any associated copyright or literary rights. See the Library Deed of Gift. Library staff will be delighted to discuss a gift of digital archival material which meets the technical specifications necessary to ensure long-term preservation and access. The library is unable to provide complimentary copies of materials in return for a donation, so donors are encouraged to obtain copies for family members prior to execution of a gift.
General Collections Gifts
Library staff will gladly discuss a gift of books or media resources for the library that supports the university's curricula and goals. All gifts are reviewed for condition and appropriateness to the collection with the understanding that the library makes all necessary decisions as to retention and other disposition. Due to the volume of material acquired and prepared for public access each year, the library is not able to provide donors with an item-by-item inventory. Also, the library is not able, per IRS rules, to provide appraisals. The responsibility for appraising gifts remains with the donor.
Cline Library is particularly interested in high-quality hardcover fiction and current scholarly materials in environmental science, global studies and education. Media titles in the following formats are currently acquired and supported by the library: DVD and music or audio recordings on CD. Items generally not needed include magazines and journals, textbooks or items in poor physical condition.
